Origin

In early summer, most parts of Japan get visited by a rainy season, the so called tsuyu (梅雨, also pronounced baiu), literally meaning "plum rain", because it coincides with the season of plums ripening.

The rainy season is generated by a collision of cold northerly and warm southerly air masses, resulting in a reasonably constant severe weather front across the Japanese archipelago for many weeks.

The rainy season lasts from the beginning of June until the middle of July in most of Japan, though it begins roughly a month earlier in the Okinawan islands. Only Hokkaido, Japan's northernmost major island, and the Ogasawara Islands are less impacted by the rainy season.

May and June are often the months right before summer, when the weather is still pleasant and not too hot. There are holidays and events taking place over these two months, and it's also a little less crowded now that cherry blossom season has finished.

The rainy season begins in June. Rainfall in Japan is often significant, though it does not occur on a daily basis. The clear days are ideal for sightseeing and other activities. Temperatures and humidity tend to climb somewhat beginning in June, but it's not too severe and definitely bearable. The average temperature is in the 21 degree Celsius, though it varies from the lows to the highs. There are a decent number of generally clear days on average, and numerous activities are still available. One of the benefits of rain is that it makes the land lush and lovely, with green everywhere!
